Confidence: Practices, Tips and Techniques to Use More of Yours

1. Make an inventory of your personal assets and accomplishments. You will get an immediate boost in
self-worth.
2. Self promote. Let others know specifically what you did, who was involved and how it added value to
the company. Be authentic: trust your ‘gut’. If you feel you are ‘over doing it’, step back. This is an
art; the only way to achieve mastery is through practice.
3. Solve tough problems. Look for the big, juicy problems to solve and tackle them.
4. Be exceedingly competent at your job.
5. Make Deposits: Help other people. If you get a break in your workload, assist others. This builds
loyalty and gratitude. It is a deposit in your relational bank account.
6. Expect acceptance. When presenting a new idea, service or proposal, visualize success, and expect
acceptance:
Self-Talk: “I am adequate.”
Walk, stand, speak like you expect acceptance; 3 P: Poise, Pace, Posture
Persevere. Try something. If it doesn’t work, try something else.
7.

3 Ps: Poise, Posture and Pace: Pay attention to your vocal pacing particularly when nervous or
stressed. Stand and sit tall, with shoulders back and chin up. Be composed. Hold your head in a straight
forward manner in business conversations. Head tilts are often perceived as flirtatious moves.

8. Observe Confident People: Watch, listen and learn from confident people.
9. Keep a Learning Journal: Take one of those three ring binders in your office and build a Confidence
Portfolio at Your Fingertips
. Include notes on speakers, great performance feedback, quotes, lessons
learned, business achievements, e-mails and articles. Portfolio at your fingertips provides a method to
organize information for fast retrieval. Uses are: resume preparation, performance review planning and
even for a self-energy boost. No more ‘searching’ for information, it’s all right at your fingertips.
10. 3Cs: Monitor your self-talk, your talk about others and your company. Do not criticize, condemn
or complain.
Offer ideas and solutions. Keep bad feelings and stories about others to yourself.
Remember: “If you don’t have something nice to say about someone, don’t say anything at all.” You
never know when the tables may turn and it might be you who is ‘talked about’ in a negative way.
11. Spread Confidence! Your attitude is contagious. Is yours worth catching?
12. Accept criticism positively and graciously. Poise, posture and pacing all help to accept feedback for
what it is; someone’s perception. Ask questions to clarify and ensure you understand their comments.
Learn and correct what matters, and move on.
13. Become really aware of your Language. Replace “I can’t because....or they won’t let me”, with “How
might I?” and “Wouldn’t it be great if we...?”
14. Find a Mentor: Identify someone whose values and results you admire. Experienced professionals love
to mentor, yet, are seldom approached. Don’t wait for a formal program; go for it!
15. Make Five! Find at least five minutes each day for YOU. Sit quietly. Breathe. Renew and refresh.
Your mind will clear and your effectiveness will soar!
